Mr. Keating in the Dead Poets society has a much different message of independence and the exploration of self from the message of Welton Academy which are tradition, honor, discipline, and excellence. Mr. Keating shows that he embraces the values of transcendentalism by having the students rip the introduction of their books. Which teaches them to think for themselves, and how to open their minds to different arts like poems, literature, etc. The boys he taught took a lot from his lessons. They all learned what he was trying to teach, which were independence, thinking for themselves, and doing what they believed in. For example, Todd found courage, self-confidence, and self-reliance through Mr. Keating's lessons.

This is so true. Mr.Keating inspires them that poetry as well as life can no be summed up in an introduction because you always have to keep an open mind. Mr.Keating stresses that the key to life is through making yourself happy and believing that you can do anything you put your mind to. And Todd definently benifited the most from the Mr.Keatings lesson. I believe that Neil who left benifit did trust in himself to persuade his dad that he wanted to be an actor.
