“carpe diem” seize the day in Latin and Mr. Keating’s (Robin Williams) “words to live by”. in this film an out of the box English teacher takes his students on a literary adventure. on which each of the students finds his true self. The students at Welton Academy For boys are expected to live by the academies four pillars tradition, honor, discipline and excellence. For most of the boys, especially Todd Anderson, the criteria had left no room for any type of self realization, that is until Mr. Keaton opened his mind. The change from square academically driven students to self realized young men is a common one in the film. Each students trials and experiences fall in neatly into the story. Most of the students adopt the transcendental ideas of confidence and non conformity take hold of the young men. Tragically Todd when denied a future in theatre kills himself fixed for ever to transcendental beliefs. Mr. Keaton is discharged for encouraging the boy. The plot is summed up with an “o captain my captain” to Keating’s "No matter what anyone tells you, words and ideas can change the world." youtu.be/vdXhWS7lLvs
