Rent is a 2005 American musical drama film directed by Chris Columbus. It is an adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name, in turn based on Giacomo Puccini's opera La bohème. The film depicts the lives of several Bohemians and their struggles with sexuality, cross-dressing, drugs, life under the shadow of AIDS, and paying their rent. It takes place in the East Village of New York City from 1989 to 1990. The film features six of the original Broadway cast members reprising their roles.
Non-conformity defines Rent. Every character is striving to be their own person, to create something worth remembering. They refuse to be shut down by the modernization going on around them. These artists are very passionate about their Bohemia. This also shows a bit of "importance of nature." Rebelling against industrialization, and trying to save their simple way of life. Self-reliance also plays an important role. Many of the characters are living with AIDS. They struggle to not only survive, but also to thrive. Two of the characters are also trying to learn to love again, after only trusting themselves for a long time. Another couple is learning that they can rely on each other as well. This show, in summary, is about finding yourself, in a world of chaos.
