In the movie Cast Away we see the main character of the movie Chuck Noland begin as what could be thought of as a very un-transcendentalist person. He begins as a work and time obsessed employee of FedEx, he has time for nothing because he is always traveling the world because of his job. He is a very tense and stressed character. Yet, he slowly evolves as his plane crashes in the ocean and he washes up on an uninhabited island in the middle of nowhere. At first he is very angry and fights nature, he even attempts to kill himself because he does not believe he can cope. It is very exciting though, as Chuck slowly finds himself through nature after accepting it and he learns to rely on himself and his survival capabilities. He clearly shows these two transcendentalist ideas and truly finds himself, and discovers the simplicity of happiness and conformity in his adventures on the island. When he finally enters back into society he is a completely different man, with different objectives and meanings, it can be said with confidence that the character Chuck Noland was truly a Transcendental man.

i agree, Chuck had one life changing event that happens to be the plain crash. By himself he realize after so long of being away from society that he only needed to depend on himself and therefore becoming a transcendental man.

Hector i agree on what you said since he did show self-reliance since he only had himself to depend on and try to survive day after day. i think chuck needed to be stranded on an island so he doesn't have to always be a stressed and grumpy and learn to appreciate life. Chuck showed he still needed someone though when he created Wilson who there to help in time of need even though he drifted away .
